In cosmetic surgery, no area of the body is off limits. Today, more men are willing to go under the knife (or needle) to cosmetically enhance the size of their penis. Phalloplasty, or penis resizing, is one of the newest trends in the $5 billion penis enhancement market. Quite simply, this lucrative plastic surgery phenomenon satisfies a growing demand: a way for men to measure up to their peers and improve their self esteem, by lengthening or enlarging their penis. Alessandro Littara, an authority in male genital aesthetic surgery, gives us his input on the latest improvements in the sector.
Penis Lengthening Technique
Penis lengthening, or penoplasty, involves a surgical technique which dates back to 1990. The approach is to cut the suspensory ligament, thus allowing the forward movement of the corpora with a gain of 1.5-4 cm in length. This improvement is most visible on the flaccid penis. However, once the suspensory ligament is cut, the results can be short-lived.

Quite logically, as scar tissue forms, it causes the penis to gradually retract to its previous position. Scar retraction is prevented by an introverting fascia suture which acts as a permanent natural “spacer”, as opposed to silicon spacers or other foreign materials. Furthermore, a V-Y plasty, named for the shape of the incisions, allows for the contextual lengthening of skin which would otherwise be too short.
Penis Enlargement Technique
While lengthening is desirable, sometimes it only fixes part of the problem. By both lengthening and enlarging the penis at the same time, a better proportion can be achieved. To enlarge the penis, the patient’s own fat is harvested (from the abdomen, flanks or upper thighs), purified from oils, blood, etc. and then re-injected along the penis shaft through tiny incisions at the base of the penis.
“Adequate fat purification is an essential step to ensure long-term fat grafts survival.”- Dr. Littara

The purification process is a critical step. The removal of the contaminants the fat contains helps ensure a better long lasting cosmetic result over time. After the healing period is over, on average, about 70% of the fat survives, leaving a visible improvement.
What’s Next in Penoplasty?
Researchers are already leveraging the potential of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) in some procedures. By further processing the fat harvested for injection to separate out the stem cells, it may be possible to enhance the production of fat cells and increase vasculature at local level, allowing for an even greater increase in penis girth.
“My desire is to share these techniques with other surgeons so that we can standardize this surgery.” – Dr. Littara
Advocates of this approach say ADSCs could be a real game-changer in cosmetic penile alteration. However, even though early results are encouraging, stem cells treatments are still experimental and more research is needed to assess their safety.
How To Get In On The Trend?
Penis resizing is, quite frankly, still a controversial surgical procedure. There are very few specialists in the world who perform cosmetic enhancement of the penis. Surgeons who perform penoplasty without proper training may leave patients with suboptimal results and complications to handle.
The best way to learn these procedures in a safe, standardized manner is through personalized training from experts that have perfected the techniques over thousands of procedures.
